College Assistance Makes It Easier For Students To Get Into College by Sean Green
Most students could use more college assistance to help them get into college. This is the first time they have had to evaluate their lives and they need guidance in determining what is important for college admissions. Here are a few tips to help families provide the college assistance that will benefit their high school students.
1. Colleges want students who will be successful academically at their school. That is why a student’s GPA and SAT and ACT test scores are usually at the top of the college’s admissions criteria. Strong grades and test scores can help students get into college. Parents can provide college assistance by helping students with their high school course selections and determining whether test prep could improve their SAT and ACT scores. Schools want students who will be eager to challenge themselves in their college courses and do well.
2. Colleges want students who are resilient and can bounce back. They know that teenagers lead lives that have their high and low points, but they hope that they will handle the ups and downs and continue to grow from them. Parents can provide college assistance by discussing topics for essays that will demonstrate resilience. What experiences could help a college get to know your student better? Showing determination and resilience on your college applications and essays can help students get into college.
3. Colleges want students to be excited and passionate about participating in activities that interest them. They do not want a freshman class that does nothing but study. Parents can advise students on selecting extracurricular activities that they will enjoy and want to pursue. Colleges expect students to get involved in campus and community events and intramural sports. Extracurricular activities help students get into college. This is where students learn to work as a team and gain leadership responsibilities that will be useful in their careers later on.
4. Colleges are interested in students who want to attend their school. Parents can offer college assistance by helping their students find ways to demonstrate their interest in different schools. Check out their website, talk to current students, email a professor and ask a question about a particular program. Meet with a college representative in your community and ask some questions about the school. All of these things show your interest in a school and will help you get into college.
5. Colleges want students to be themselves. They are interested in a unique group of individuals who will all bring something special to the freshman class. Do not try to be something or somebody that you are not. Parents can provide students with college assistance on their applications and essays by making positive suggestions, but the work must be the student’s own. Students need college assistance with their college search to find schools that are a good fit for them. Schools know when a student’s personality and academic abilities are a good match for their college.
It is important for families to seek out college assistance to help their students get into college. Parents need to determine whether they have the time or expertise to assist their high school student. Does the high school counselor offer more than 45 minutes of college planning? Would their student benefit from working with an educational consultant or college planner? Few students are successful in handling the college admissions process on their own. They need help with college planning. College is too big an investment to leave it up to chance.
