Garage Sales Top Tips for a Top Garage Sale by Tom Reincke
Garage salesâ love em or hate em they serve a purpose simply because one mans junk is another’s treasure. They make for a great and profitable way to clear the garage of unwanted clutter and provide a good clean out of the rest of the house. However don’t think for one minute that garage sales can’t be fun or profitable. The fun part is all in your attitude and the profitable bit is all about timing, costing and presentation.
The obvious place to start your organization for your garage sale is a time. For most people a lead time of 2 to 3 weeks works well. Any shorter and you tend to cut corners and end up rushing to get it all organized. Remember, you’re in this to have fun.
1) Timing
Pick a date that won’t conflict with any holidays, kids sports, sporting calendars or planned events. Weekends seem to work best for most people with Saturday most popular. Remember your start times can sometimes be pretty early and this doesn’t work too well for Sunday sales. Ideally you sale should be all but over by around lunch time.
2) Sales aren’t sales without buyers
Now promote your sale. Depending on your location and the council laws governing your ability to place signs around your neighborhood, you obviously need to try to let as many local people know about your sale as you can. Let’s face it; there are not too many people that are going to travel from the other side of town to attend your garage sale. By all means advertise on as many free or very cheap web dedicated sites as you can. (Remember; be careful not to spend $2 on advertising to get a dollar in return).
Print out some A4 signs to tape to roadside fixtures (council laws permitting), otherwise you may have to go to the effort of making or borrowing a few free standing signs. You can also make great use of your car by making a framed sign that you could attach to the roof racks and park it strategically on a nearby busy roadway. Don’t forget, utilize any community notice board that will hang a sign. Keep you sign content minimal. Every one knows what to expect when they attend a garage sale so stick to “GARAGE SALE” and underneath that, print the address and time of the sale.
A very effective way to both advertise very cheaply but with great clarity is to put up your own web site and take photos and appropriate videos of all your sale items. Then all you need to do is advertise your web address with a few explanation lines in a paper rather than a spacious expensive ad.
3) How to have a fast sell out sale
Literally anything will sell at a garage sale if you follow 4 principles as your guidelines.
Cleanliness: Anything you sell must be clean. No exceptions.
Working Condition: Try to have every thing in a working condition but if it is not, clearly label it so and price it accordingly.
Pricing: Be realistic. We all think that our ‘stuff’ is greatâ even our old school blazer. The truth of it is a likely buyer only wants it for a fancy dress party and will probably use it as a dog rug after that. And new dog rugs are but a few dollars. So if you want to get rid of your Blazer and other garage sale items, then cut right to the chase and price your items to sell while you have a buyer present.
Value packed: Most items will sell when they are value packed. Like books for example, one book title at a time is taking the road to nowhere. Bundle some books together and now you make it a better buying proposition. A great sales offer here is to offer a free book or item with every say $5 of goods bought. You be the decider on the value but make it enticing.
4) Presentation Set up
Be organized and tidy. Many possible purchasers will be drive-bys. You don’t want first impressions to look like your sale is a dumping ground for rubbish. Try to group like items together and think about how some of your bigger items can be taken after they are purchased. You don’t want an old stove stuck behind your tea tables with all your 500 weight of books on them that need to be shifted if you get an early buyer for the stove.
You also want to try and make it appear as a great event to passers by. Perhaps string up some car yard flags or get liberal with balloons and streamers to draw some attention to your stall so to speak.
5) Bargain hagglers
Garage sales are all about bargaining and it’s just a part of the process, excitement and expectations of garage sales. While you’re under no obligation to bargain, have a cut off price that you won’t go below if you really think it necessary and then have fun with your customers. Don’t be overly serious about it and do be generous. Practice some up-sell skills on a buyer that you have just been generous with and you’ll find that they generally respond in kind.
Remember, you don’t want any of the sale items back so your goal is to sell everything. You don’t want to be carrying a bunch of your own stuff back into your house at the end of your sale.
6) Top Ideas to make extra cash at your garage sale
Encourage the kids to put up a lemonade stand
Package and sell home made cookies, jams, chutneys etc
Sell some of your specialist arts and crafts hobbies like scented candles, home made crafts or paintings.
Garage sales can be a lot of fun. Make it a family event and perhaps put the BBQ on. Invite the neighbors, put on some music and perhaps a fortified cup of teaâ depending on the time of day of course. While a garage sale can take some organising, they can be a great way to make some extra cash. So have some fun and enjoy the clean out. Good luck.
