NSW Tender for Laneway Art by Corwin Smith
The City of Sydney has released a NSW Tender inviting artists, designers, curators and other creative people to submit proposals for the 2011 Laneway Art program.
Applicants will be required to submit an expression of interest (EOI) – including a proposal – for temporary art projects as part of the Laneway Art program in the City’s laneways in 2011 that will be supported by the City of Sydney for period of four months.
2011 marks the fifth year of the Laneway Art program which is helping to redefine Sydney as a truly cultural and creative city as envisioned in the City’s Sustainable Sydney 2030 plan. With the intention to activate and enliven Sydney’s laneways and public spaces through temporary public art the City’s Laneway Art program is developing a reputation for innovative and exciting works by some of Australia’s best artists and designers and other creative minds.
Based on feedback from previous years this years Invitation to Submit a Proposal is being distributed much earlier than previous years to allow the City’s creative minds to percolate over the summer. The early release date allows prospective candidates to develop and refine ideas and work with colleagues to make their submissions the best they can be without going overboard due to tight deadlines.
The submission of Laneway Art proposals in 2011 can be either Individual Project Proposals or Curatorial Proposals by curators or curatorial teams recommending groups of artists to undertake the Laneway Program.
Art & About Sydney 2010, the City of Sydney’s ninth annual public art festival, won the ‘Remix the City’ category for Sydney Statues Project!, Oh Alfred and Laneway Art Project, three projects which used art to make people think and engage with their community and environment.
“I congratulate all the producers, creative directors, artists and staff who worked alongside the City of Sydney to make Art & About Sydney 2010 our most successful to date,” said Lord Mayor Clover Moore MP.
“Public art festivals such as Art & About Sydney play an active role in uniting Sydney’s creative talent and inspiring the wider community. By moving art out of the gallery and into the public domain, Sydneysiders have the chance to enjoy three weeks of free and engaging art works with our stunning City as the canvas.”
“This award confirms Art & About Sydney as a crucial part of Sydney’s cultural calendar, and I look forward to our 10th annual Art & About Sydney, which will be launched in September this year.”
Next year’s Laneway Art program will run from October 2011 to January 2012.
The NSW Tender for laneway art closes on the 1st March 2011.
